No BSP-SP tie-up for 2019 Lok Sabha polls, rumours baseless, says Mayawati

The Bahujan Samaj Party and Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party (SP) have not formed an alliance in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, BSP chief Mayawati said today.

A former chief minister like Yadav, Mayawati made these comments after her party's Gorakhpur in-charge, Ghanshyam Chandra Kharwar, declared support for Praveen Kumar Nishad, an SP candidate for an upcoming Lok Sabha bypoll, according to ANI.

The news agency also quoted the BSP's Allahabad zonal coordinator, Ashok Gautam, as saying party members had decided to support another SP bypoll candidate, Nagendra Singh Patel, as they wanted to "eliminate" the BJP.

But in a video published by ANI, Mayawati said the BSP had not fielded candidates for the Phulpur and Gorakhpur Lok Sabha bypolls, and that party members would "exercise their vote" to defeat the BJP candidate.

Both the SP and the BSP were influential parties in Uttar Pradesh, but the BJP's stunning victory in the 2017 assembly elections changed all that. A saffron wave swept Akhilesh Yadav's government out of power, and Yodi Adityanath, the five-time MP from Gorkahpur, was sworn in as chief minister.
